The tight-knit community of Argyle, Texas is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved educator and leader. Scott Gibson, the 49-year-old principal of Argyle Middle School, died on Sunday, January 28th, 2024 following an accident while out of state. He leaves behind his wife Jodie and their four children.
Gibson’s passing has sent shockwaves through the school district where his fun-loving spirit and dedication touched so many lives. “It does feel like a whole part of you is completely missing,” Jodie Gibson said about her late husband. The news has left students, teachers, and families heartbroken as they grapple with the void left by their charismatic principal.
A Career Devoted to Shaping Young Lives
Scott Gibson served as the principal of Argyle Middle School since 2019, but his impact extended far beyond his administrative role. Colleagues and parents remember him as an educator with a true passion for supporting and inspiring students during their formative years.
“Mr. Gibson was more than just a principal. He was a mentor, a role model, and a friend to so many of our children,” said Sarah Thompson, whose son attends AMS. “He had a gift for connecting with middle schoolers and making them feel valued.”
Gibson began his career in education over two decades ago. Prior to becoming principal, he taught social studies and coached various sports teams, using athletics as a way to teach important life lessons. His leadership style centered around building strong relationships and creating a positive school culture.
Remembering a Fun-Loving Spirit
Ask anyone who knew Scott Gibson and they’ll tell you about his infectious smile and fun-loving approach to life and learning. He was known for his silly morning announcements, elaborate costumes on spirit days, and willingness to participate in student events and fundraisers.
“Seeing Mr. Gibson dress up for Halloween or get pied in the face at a pep rally – that’s what the kids will always remember,” said AMS teacher Mark Davis. “He knew how to have fun and bring joy to our school, while still commanding respect.”
Gibson prioritized building a positive environment where students felt safe to learn, grow, and even make mistakes. He championed inclusive programs, anti-bullying initiatives, and social-emotional learning to support the wellbeing of the whole child.
A Devoted Family Man
For all his contributions at school, Scott Gibson’s first priority was always his family. He and his high school sweetheart Jodie raised four children together – two sons and two daughters ranging from elementary to high school age.
Gibson was a devoted husband and father, attending every game, performance, and milestone he could. “No matter how busy he was with work, Scott always made time for family dinners, movie nights, and weekends cheering on the kids,” Jodie shared.
The Gibsons were fixtures in the Argyle community, active in their church and various youth programs. Even with his school leadership responsibilities, Gibson still found time to coach his sons’ sports teams and lead his daughters’ Girl Scout troops.
Remembering and Honoring His Legacy
As the Argyle community processes this immense loss, they are finding ways to honor and remember the man who meant so much to so many. Argyle ISD has established memorial funds to support the Gibson family during this difficult time.
A funeral mass for Scott Gibson will be held on February 3rd at St. Mark Catholic Church, followed by a reception at the school. Students and staff are planning special tributes, including a memory wall in the school lobby and a scholarship fund in Gibson’s name.
“We want to carry on Mr. Gibson’s legacy of leading with love, laughter, and heart,” said Assistant Principal Amy Wilson. “He showed us what it means to be an educator who truly cares. We’ll never forget the difference he made and we’ll honor him by continuing his work.”
